Yes, it is loud while it's grinding but the noise never lasts more than about 10 seconds. Often I just pulse it a few times for 2-3 seconds each. It's the smell of fresh coffee, not the sound of the grinder that gets our family out of bed in the morning.

I don't use it very often, but that's because I don't really make coffee that often. It gets the job done, and does it fairly quickly and painlessly.
It's a bit noisy, but I think that's to be expected. After all, you're grinding coffee beans.
I've strictly used this for coffee, not spices. I imagine it would do a fine job on spices as well, but given the smaller size of most spices, you should read a different review where someone has used it for that. However, if you do plan on grinding spices, buy 2. One for spices, one for coffee.
The grinder is a little difficult to clean. It's not submersible, and the blade isn't removable. The top/lid is easy enough to clean (as it is submersible), but for the unit, I shake/tap it out onto a paper towel, and then use a new, damp paper towel to clean it out, and then dry it.

I have owned several Krups, but now the plastic cup on top is too shallow and if you grind a full amount you can't invert the ground coffee into the clear cup. Some have very inconvenient cord storage...often fraying dangerously at the point where they bend upon attaching to the grinder. I have tried the Melitta Burr grinder...the static electricity (a major consideration) made a mess every time I used it...gave it away. The top feels cheap on this Braun and it is noisy, but it does have all the features I need in one grinder and is an excellent bargain.
